The Right Mindset to Learn English

Posted on October 18, 2023October 18, 2023 by Angel Carpio

or more The Right Mindset to Learn (English), but let´s start.

To begin your journey learning English, think about what your journey has been learning how to communicate, more broadly. How do you communicate in your mother tongue or in the language you feel more comfortable speaking?

-Somewhere around variations of well and badly.

This is important to set realistic goals. Realistic goals lead to preparing for specific levels of effort you will have to make. If you know you ought to put in more hard work, it might impact you less negatively when that becomes necessary.

If your mother tongue is, say, Spanish, maybe you understand how to be effective, or maybe you are not effective, or most likely, your effectiveness lacks consistency. This means that sometimes, you say what you are convinced you want to say. That also means that sometimes, you wish you had spoken differently by using different words, or styles, or body language, or simply better ideas to target your communicative needs.

Going back to Spanish being your hypothetical mother tongue, don´t you think you could show the same levels of effectiveness in a second language?

The answer is YOU MIGHT, so get ready for the ease, and for the struggle.

That is, however, not the answer we might need to have in mind for life. The answer we need to give ourselves is: All the struggle to learn a second language will improve the way I handle my discourse in my first language. And don´t be afraid to learn a lot, because learning can be painful, but only until it´s not.
